Rachel Dalliday says there were reasons to be optimistic about the grand opening of ’76 SIPS Café at Trent University’s Athletic Centre.
A soft launch a week earlier seemed to pique a lot of interest, and the timing was ideal with the fall semester just getting underway. But the heavy traffic and warm reception during the grand opening Sept. 6 sinched it for owners Paul and Margo Hudson.
“It was really busy all afternoon,” says Dalliday, marketing manager for the business. “It was great to see a lot of students coming out.”
If the name sounds familiar, it’s because ’76 SIPS is already a favourite stop for the health and hungry in Peterborough.
The first café was opened inside Jo Anne’s Place Health Foods on Lansdowne Street West back in 2018. The ‘76’ refers to the 1976 opening of Jo Anne’s Place in Peterborough.
But when an opening became available inside the Trent Athletic Centre earlier this year, the Hudsons began to consider an expansion of sorts.
“Trent was looking for some kind of healthy option to have on campus so ultimately, it came about that ‘76 SIPS seemed like a really good fit for that location,” Dalliday says
“We are excited to have the team from ‘76 SIPS Café join Trent as our new service provider at the Athletic Centre,” Mark Murdoch, executive director of Food, Conferences and Campus Payment Services at Trent said. “The menu checks all the boxes: great tasting, healthy, local, sustainable, with gluten free and vegan choices.”
Dalliday says the location of the first café, somewhat close to Fleming College, had already proved to be popular with the student demographic with its “really health and organic ingredients.” And early indications from the Trent location seems to show staff appreciate it as well.
“We are thrilled to be joining the Trent community,” the Hudsons stated in an email. “At Jo Anne’s Place, we’ve been fostering relationships in the Kawarthas for over 45 years, so we’re really excited about this opportunity to connect with more of our local community.”
On the café’s website, it refers to ’76 SIPS as “our little sustainable and nutrition-based café.
“You can find all our freshly made organic smoothies, café beverages, house-made soup and delicious sandwiches served daily at our Lansdowne location, along with our Fresh-To-Go items located in our grab and go cooler.” It also points to “nutritionally dense and delicious pre-made meal options,” including pre-made salads and select café items, at its other locations, located on Water Street North in Peterborough and Russell Street West in Lindsay.
The café at Trent is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
